Inclusion Classroom
So when I did my observation hours I was following a special ed teacher who was mostly an inclusion teacher. She took three students out of their regular class just for reading then they went back to the regular classroom with the other students while the special ed teacher helped them there. I know a lot of people are in favor of inclusion for special ed students, but I don't know how I feel about it. I honestly feel that those students would be better off if they spent more time with the special ed teacher in small groups, because once they went into their regular classroom they all got distracted by the other students and they were not doing their school work, then they were getting in trouble for not working. So I was wondering how other people felt about inclusion, because all the teachers I have ever worked with seem to like included their students.... I just really don't know

I think it has a lot to do with how it is done. Inclusion can be done very well and benefit the child but I unfortunately I think that it's not done like it's suppose to most of the time. It think the reason that is is because teachers feel uncomfortable with the special ed. kids. It might be something that they are not trained for. As a result they let them slide and concentrate on the other kids. As far as this particular observation is concerned, the teacher should know by now how they act around the other kids and do something different to keep the student's attention.
ReplyDeleteI think that inclusion is important for social aspects of learning. Kids in special ed classrooms pick up a lot of social manerisms from spending time with their general education peers. I have seen many students attend "specials" and a small amount of class time with their gen ed class as well as recess. I think that is a good balance between the support and general classroom.
ReplyDeleteI feel that it all depends on the particular student. If a student has the intelligence to be in a normal classroom then i believe that they should be. If their focus is the problem then maybe having an aid there guiding them to keep them focussed is a better idea then taking them out of the classroom permanently. Deciding whether or not a child should be included in a normal classroom is a hard decision to make. It all just depends on the child and how their parents feel.
ReplyDeleteI feel inclusion depends on the child's disability and how severe it is. If the student could learn in a Gened classroom with an aide there then I think that is the right move. I think its better for the child to be with the Gened students and then go with their aide outside the classroom to do reading and other subjects. I think having the gened teacher in the special ed student's day is a good thing. It helps both the student and the teacher. So basically, I feel it depends on the student whether or not they are in the Gened classroom or the special ed classroom.
